Call for Scholarly Program Submissions to 2022 AOM Conference: International Management Division

Program Chair: Grazia D. Santangelo, Copenhagen Business School, im@cbs.dk

The International Management (IM) Division invites submissions of papers and symposia for the scholarly program of the 2022 Academy of Management (AOM) annual meeting. The meeting will be held in Seattle from 5 to 9 August. AOM has announced that the conference will be hybrid. A selection of sessions will be live-streamed from Seattle to allow for participation for members who cannot travel to the meeting venue. A virtual program will run from 4 to 10 August and will include both live and asynchronous sessions. The theme for the 2022 AOM meeting is Creating a Better World Together. The theme should be particularly salient to our division members, given that the COVID19 global pandemic and the broad societal unrest of the last couple of years have drastically changed the world's societal structure and how managers and organizations operate across borders.

The IM Division supports the Academy in advancing knowledge in the field of international management. The conference theme invites us to consider how businesses and organizations operating across borders and cultures can contribute to creating a better world. It is also an opportunity to consider how theories of international management can shed light on these challenges and whether they need to be revised or integrated with theoretical lenses from other fields. We invited submissions of paper and symposium proposals that contribute to the overall theme of this year's meeting or questions and issues distinctive of the international management field. Paper and symposium proposals could contribute to the overall theme by addressing questions such as 1) What skills will business organizations and managers operating across borders and cultures need to compete globally? 2) How can multinationals manage their global operations to remain competitive in times of uncertainty? 3) How can multinationals integrate responsible conduct in their global strategy? 4) How does the portfolio of market and non-market strategies of global corporations need to be adjusted to respond to the pressing societal challenges? We also welcome paper and symposia submissions related to any of the topics within the domain of international management such as the cross-border management of operations, including multi-country, multi-unit, strategy formulation, and implementation; evolving forms and management practices in cross-border business; the cross-border differential impact of cultural, social, economic, technological, political, and other institutional forces on strategies, organizational forms, and management practices; the international competitiveness of firms, industries, and nations; and comparative management studies involving two or more countries. Best Paper Awards: The IM Division is proud of the outstanding work of our members and, along with our sponsors, will present the eight following best paper awards at the 2022 conference:

    • IM Division Best Paper in International Corporate Governance Award,
    • IM Division Best Paper in International Ethics, Social Responsibility, &/or Sustainability Award,
    • IM Division Best Paper in OB/HRM/OT Award,

    • IM Division GWU-CIBER Best Paper on Emerging Markets Award,

    • Douglas Nigh Award (for interdisciplinary papers by junior scholars) Award.

Note that at least one author in the paper co-author team must be an IM Division member to be eligible for these awards. Please submit your best work to the IM Division for award consideration.

Please consider submitting symposium proposals that explore interesting topics using innovative perspectives and a variety of theoretical lenses. Symposia offer a great opportunity to examine interfaces by engaging in meaningful and highly-interactive dialogue among the panelists and with the audience.

Submission deadline: All paper and symposium submissions must be completed by Tuesday, 11 January 2022, at 5:00 PM ET (NY time). The AOM indicates that the Submission Center will open in early December 2021- so there is plenty of time to avoid the last-minute rush! Submission guidelines are available on the AOM website.

Reviewing: If you submit a paper, we also expect you to serve as a reviewer. Please sign up! Select the IM Division and topic codes that reflect your areas of expertise. We will ask you to review about three submissions between mid-January and mid-February 2022 and to provide the authors with thoughtful and constructive comments that are developmental in nature. The Division recognizes the best reviewers with Best Reviewer Awards. The AOM indicates that the 2022 Review System will open in early December 2021. Thank you in advance!

With your excellent paper and symposium submissions - and your invaluable assistance with the reviewing process - we will have yet another interesting and thought-provoking IM program. See you in summer 2022!
