Healthcare management is trending toward creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Some suggest that innovation and entrepreneurship can improve healthcare management and yield novel solutions to improve patient care. While studies from the medtech and pharmaceutical industries exist in the innovation and entrepreneurship literature, empirical and theoretical studies incorporating innovation and entrepreneurship within healthcare management is limited. There is increasing evidence that many of the current global health challenges are managerial not medical. Even though there have been significant advances in modern medicine, there remain many barriers to delivering healthcare. Similarly, there are global challenges in financing healthcare coverage and insurance to pay for these services. Another challenge is the recruitment, development and retention of the global healthcare workforce. Despite the challenges to these systemic problems, there is emerging evidence that healthcare management, innovation and entrepreneurship can be solutions. These trends toward innovation and entrepreneurship are particularly noticeable in the global health context. In low and middle income countries, improvisation and experimentation activities are particularly prevalent in healthcare management; yet research lags practice. As such, the purpose of this PDW is to create a global health research agenda at the intersection of healthcare management, entrepreneurship, and innovation. We expect this conversation to help scholars develop research questions and explore current trends and future directions for research in this emerging area of study.
