Instructors: Dr. Michael Baumgartner and Dr. Alrik Thiem | University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland
Host: The William M. Tierney Center for Health Services Research at Regenstrief Institute, Inc. | Indianapolis, IN
Description: Participants in this intensive 5-day seminar will learn how to conduct Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and Coincidence Analysis (CNA) in their own projects. In this hands-on course, instructors Alrik Thiem and Michael Baumgartner use concepts, math and concrete examples to teach participants how QCA works in general; how it is fundamentally different from correlation-based statistical methods; how to use the QCA software (provided free of charge), including how to write and execute commands and how to interpret the results; and the strengths and limitations of QCA. Thiem and Baumgartner are among the most active researchers in the field, publishing and teaching at the forefront of configurational research, and authors of the most powerful software for QCA and CNA.
For many, QCA offers an entirely new and different approach to generate new research insights and findings from existing data.
QCA is a mathematical method with nuances that matter. A solid understanding of the math and concepts underpinning this approach is necessary to accurate application.
QCA (and its cousin method, CNA) represent fundamentally different approaches to data analysis than current traditional methods like logistic regression or qualitative research. Using QCA, analysts can mathematically identify solutions where combinations of specific factors that occur together are difference-makers to an outcome of interest. QCA and CNA may be of special interest to investigators in health and health care, where determinants of outcomes can be complex and multifactorial.
Be part of an emerging community of scientists focused on the innovative, and correct, application of QCA in research related to health and health care.
This seminar is appropriate for researchers from other fields, including business, political science, sociology, environmental sciences, and education, among others; the approach is broadly applicable.
