AOM Session 15597, HCM Teaching Incubator: Becoming More Effective Instructors (application required)
In our academic communities, we often stress the importance and value of balancing research and teaching, yet many of us find that our rigorous preparations to become effective researchers and scholars leave little room for meaningful conversations about how to teach effectively. Recognizing this challenge, the HCM Division and its Teaching Committee are pleased to introduce a new PDW that seeks to provide a forum in which health care management scholars can discuss pertinent issues about teaching, from common questions and challenges that educators confront to helpful practices, tips, and ideas to becoming more effective instructors. Similar to the interactive and popular "Research Incubator" PDW that has been well received in the HCM Division for many years, the "Teaching Incubator" PDW will focus on challenges relating to teaching rather than research.
The first-ever "HCM Teaching Incubator" is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 11 from 8:00 to 10:00 AM in the Columbus CD room at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. This session will be conducted as a rotating series of four 20-minute, interactive round table discussions, with participants receiving advice and helpful guidance on teaching challenges and issues confronted in a range of educational settings. Because of this format and a limited session capacity, individuals interested in attending this PDW must pre-register and submit an application form in advance of the annual meeting in order to participate. Information on this application and registration process is discussed below.
For those who would value feedback, advice, or help with teaching, the "Teaching Incubator" PDW will be of particular interest, offering helpful guidance on issues confronted in a range of educational settings by health care management instructors. Each round table will focus on a specific theme, with designated teaching mentors providing guidance and feedback on topics relating to that table's theme. Participants will be matched to specific round table discussions based on the information they provide in their application form, allowing applicants to note their areas of interest and raise specific teaching-related questions. Possible round table themes may include: aspects of course organization; creative teaching methods; connecting the classroom to the field; developing new courses; instructing online courses; overcoming challenging student issues; teaching doctoral students; teaching international students; and, teaching undergraduate students, among others.
The application is due by Friday, July 27, 2018 at 11:59 PM ET. To access the application, go to: https://goo.gl/forms/33kYo6RXHakQcr3r1.
