    The Department of Health Administration at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship position in Healthcare Analytics. The successful candidate will conduct research under the supervision of Associate Professor Christian Wernz working on a variety of projects, including organ transplantation and matching decisions, Medicaid fraud detection, healthcare quality improvements in correctional facilities, and health IT challenges in hospitals. The successful candidate has methodological expertise in one or more of the following areas: simulation, optimization, big data analytics, and decision analysis/theory. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach a course on data analytics in our top-ranked Master of Health Administration (MHA) program.

    Dr. Wernz will actively mentor and guide the candidate's professional development in publishing, grant writing and teaching. Dr. Wernz has received over $1.8 million in grant funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute, as well as industry and other funding sources. His research has been published in top-tier operations research, healthcare engineering, and health policy journals. The successful candidate will join Dr. Wernz's research group, which includes MHA students, PhD students and another postdoc.

    The Department of Health Administration is a top 5 Healthcare Management Program (U.S. News & World Report). This summer, the department will move into a brand new building on VCU's medical campus, which will house all of the 11 units of the College of Health Professions supporting a collaborative and transdisciplinary research environment. Richmond is a diverse and thriving city, with world-class museums, a vibrant food scene and a variety of outdoor activities.

    The (flexible) position start date is August 1, 2019. The initial appointment will be for one year and can be extended to a second or third year depending on job performance and funding availability. By the start date, the candidates should have completed a PhD in industrial engineering, operations research, operations management, data science or related quantitative field. Selection criteria include depth and breadth of methodological expertise, healthcare domain knowledge, publication quality and quantity, grant writing experience, and teaching record. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
