  • 1.  Caucus: dataset curation/collaboration opportunities for linking management practices to organizational outcomes

    Posted 07-29-2012 09:16

    Dear colleagues,

    Christy Lemak and I will be hosting a caucus to discuss needs and opportunities related to organizational outcomes data within the scholarly community. I will paste the description below. Part of the impetus for the caucus relates to work we are doing with the National Center for Healthcare Leadership to facilitate accessibility to organizational outcomes data; another goal is to explore whether there are efficiencies to be had in improving communication about projects and collaboration interests within the scholarly community.

    If you have a keen interest in the above topics but will not be available for the session for any reason, please feel free to contact either Christy or myself so that we can collect your perspectives in advance of the session, communicate the outcomes of the session to you, or both.

    Thanks,

    Andy Garman

    Linking management practices to organization outcomes: dataset curation/collaboration opportunities
    Health systems data caucus

    Host: Christy Harris Lemak; U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor;
    Host: Andrew N. Garman; Rush U.;
    Participant: Timothy R. Huerta; Texas Tech U.;
    Participant: Ingrid M. Nembhard; Yale U.;
    Participant: Christopher Johnson; U. of Washington;
    Participant: Shoou-Yih Daniel Lee; U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor;
    Participant: Joanna Jiang; Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality;

    Recent years have brought expanding public availability of process and outcomes data about healthcare systems, particularly within the United States. However without the existence of a centralized repository or standardized access protocols, many of these datasets remain difficult to retrieve and work with, and as such their full potential as research tools is not being realized. The proposed caucus seeks to bring together researchers who study the links between healthcare management practices and health systems process and outcomes data, to assess potential interest in developing a dataset-driven collaborative. The goals of such a collaborative would be to (1) eliminate redundant efforts to access and clean datasets, (2) identify and address common limitations found in publically available datasets, and (3) facilitate coordination and collaboration across researchers and research teams.

    Andy,
    couple of questions - when is the caucus and are you only interested in US data?
    Regards,

    Thanks for your questions, Marlene.  Session will be held at 3:00pm Monday, August 06 in Columbus II of the Mariott. I anticipate the initial conversations will focus mainly on the publicly available U.S. datasets; however, given the multiple movements afoot to create international comparability across healthcare outcomes data, a wider scope will likely evolve over time.
